Yongchu Valley

Yongchu Valley

It is a great place for those who like clear valleys and lush primeval forests, and for those who want to enjoy a few hours of mountain climbing. In the old days, Anui-hyeon had three places with outstanding scenery, and it is said to be ‘Three dongs in Anui’. This Yongchu Valley is also called ‘Shimjin-dong’ because ‘the place where I fell in love with the truth because of the beauty of the deep valley’. Upon entering the entrance of Yongchu Valley, there is Simwonjeong Pavilion, the essence of Shimjin-dong. It was built in the 3rd year of King Gojong (1806) by his descendants in the place where Confucian scholar Donam Jeong Ji-young used to play. It is said that when you climb up the plain and old-fashioned pavilion, even your mind becomes clear, and a group of overlapping granite unfolds at a glance.

If you go up along the road from here, there are signboards with legends and origins written all over the valley. After passing Simwonjeong Pavilion and going about 3km further, Iljumun Gate of Jangsusa Temple rises lonely behind a large parking lot. Jangsusa Temple is said to have been founded by Buddhist monk Gakyeon in the 9th year of King Soji of Silla. However, it is regrettable that the traces of Jangsusa Temple were lost due to the Korean War, the tragedy of the Korean War, and have not been restored, leaving only Iljumun.

If you stop by ‘Yongchusa Temple’ in search of traces of the temple, you will hear a thunderous sound in front of the temple, Yongchu Falls. The water that gathers and gathers in the depths of Yongchu Valley falls down to the dragon and lake, and the summer heat is forgotten. As if an angry dragon struggles, the water stream that falls vigorously bounces off the water droplets in all directions, creating a spectacular view, and standing in front of the waterfall makes my heart feel refreshed.

If you go up along the small road, crystal-clear water flows quietly and the superb view of the surrounding valley makes you want to sit down and live for a thousand years. The sound of unknown birds chases away the heat, and I just want to take off my clothes and throw myself into the wall.
